Winter’s Summer Hours

As we head into winter, and the inevitable shopping frenzy that takes over the globe, I couldn’t help but think of this little 2009 film, Summer Hours, with Juliette Binoche, directed by Olivier Assayas.

With an interesting look at how each generation values art, culture and inheritance differently, and I don’t mean just a dollar amount of inheritance, although that does play a part in the story, it’s worthy to note how material things affect us, our families, our memories, and our outlook on what’s really valuable.  You can’t help but wonder if present objects of functional art, such as a dish set, designed by one of the characters, will be highly assessed in the future as a collection piece by the next generation, or cast aside as a common, everyday item.

Poignant.
